Saving Fuel Must Begin in Homes

9th November 2006

Phil Spencer joins forces with Bristish Gas to 'Save a Billion'.

Television presenter Phil Spencer has warned that our homes cause more damage to the environment that gas-guzzling 4x4 cars.

Phil said “People can save on their bills and do their bit for the environment by becoming more energy efficient around the house. We know of the environmental harm that cars cause but our homes are a far greater danger. Too many of us aren’t aware of the small changes we can make. If everybody put one energy saving light bulb in their home, that’s the equivalent of planting 10 million new trees. Small changes make a difference.

Simple things like filling the kettle only with the water you need, turning lights off when you leave the room and not leaving electrical items on standby, are fundamental. You would save £46 a year if all you did was switch you TV and DVD off from standby. If everyone did that we would save £1 billion of energy. It is the equivalent of taking 2.3 million cars off the road.

Spencer spoke out as part of the Save a Billion campaign by British Gas. One in every £3 spent on energy in the UK is wasted through poor energy efficiency, according to the power company.

Top Six Tips:

Replace your boiler every 15 years.
Install double glazing
Switch off lights
Boil the water you need for one cup rather than heating a full kettle
Wash your laundry and 40C rather than 60C.
Turn your thermostat down by 1C.
